The “Fashion Road: Dialogue across Borders”

23 March 2012

"Fashion Road: Dialogue across Borders" exhibition opens at Vanadzor Museum of Fine Arts on March 23, 2012. The project was is funded by the European Union through Culture Fund and European Cultural Foundation and was made possible through the joint efforts of five members of the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC): the British Council, the Goethe Institute, the Romanian Cultural Institute, the Danish Cultural Institute and the Czech Centres. Fashion Road is a unique expression of intercultural dialogue and collaboration, made possible by ten gifted fashion designers: five from Armenia and one from each of the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Romania and the United Kingdom.

During an intensive ten-day residency, they were introduced to Armenia's culture, history and traditions. There followed a reciprocal visit by each Armenian designer to their partner's country.

The project celebrates the diversity and harmony of cultures, contextualised in the garments of the designers, and beautifully visualised through textile, colour, cultural elements and the styles of the different countries. Fashion, although deeply imbued with personal identity, also holds within its fibres the history and culture of a people.

Through an exploration of their partner's cultural heritage and landscape, each pair of designers worked collaboratively to develop their collection of four garments presented in this touring exhibition.

British Council's "Fashion Road" exhibition will be held at Vanadzor Museum of Fine Arts from March 23 to 30.

Admission is free of charge.
